WHAT'S YOUR SELF RESPECT WORTH?

A coworker sent me this article* this morning and I want to say I'm surprised but I'm not. What saddens me is that there are probably a whole lot of chicks out there who would read this article and not see anything wrong with it. For that kind of money, damn right I'd let my man screw around a little. He's probably cheating anyway. I might as well get paid. They would probably even say it's better to know about it from the jump rather than be surprised by it (a la Juanita Jordan or Kobe's wife). Is that the society we've created for our girls? That your self respect is for sale? That it's okay to allow yourself to be treated any kind of way for the right price? The only "redeeming quality" about this situation is that at least the woman in the article and the other examples I mentioned are getting paid (not that that really makes it any better) but there are girls out there disrespecting themselves in the same way to get their light bill paid or a couple of pair of Nine West shoes or worse yet, nothing at all. Sad.

This isn't a new thing either. I think about the examples that have been set by previous generations. I was watching What's Love Got to Do With It the other week and there was a scene where Ike was all in some chick's grill right in front of Tina and her family. Tina was disgusted but her mother dismissed her feelings, reminding her that she was making money and living good. Nevermind that Ike was cheating on her and beating her ass. Ike bought mama a new car so Tina, stop pissing him off and making him beat you. {rolling eyes} Betty Wright told women to get their acts together lest they make it easy for the clean up woman. But then after the pain, she turned around and said having a piece of man is better than having no man at all. Sheesh.
