GOOD TIMES
part two

Monday morning, we were up bright and early for more skiing. Thankfully the weather was better. We stopped at one of the lodges for lunch. There was no indoor seating, only picnic tables and bar tables. I took a seat and tried to figure out the menu. I saw someone eating something that looked like a burrito and the only words on the menu I understood were "hot dog" so I decided to order one of those. I knew it wouldn't be a nice juicy 100% beef ballpark, but you take what you can get. What I didn't know is that what I would get was a toasted sub roll with a hole drilled through the middle. They squirted some ketchup and Grey Poupon (not that I don't like Grey Poupon, just not on hot dogs) into the hole and jammed a weiner inside as well. Not to mention, there was way more roll than weiner. But what can I say, I was hungry so I ate it.

I know I'm a picky eater but I attempt to eat the local fare whenever I travel. Our hotel had a variety of different restaurants - buffet (pronounced boo-fay by the Swiss), Italian, Greek, Thai and fondue. We tried to have dinner at each one. Much to my dismay, there was never a whole meal that I enjoyed and I never left the table full. One night was Italian. The lasagna seemed suspect so I decided on spaghetti - can't go wrong with that. Right? Wrong. Prior to ordering, I had the waiter translate the description of the spaghetti for me (remember the menus are in German). Spaghetti with parmesan cheese. Cool, just like I like it. Nope. When the spaghetti came, there was no meat sauce. The sauce was the parmesan cheese - spaghetti noodles in cheese sauce. It didn't taste bad but it wasn't what I was expecting and it wasn't filling.

No worries though. We went to the Thai restaurant the next night. I love pad Thai noodle. We got there and were seated, only to find out there was no pad Thai noodle. I don't know if that's an American concoction or if they just didn't have any but I was out of luck. We ordered chicken kabobs for the appetizer, which were tasty, and some kind of chicken for the entree. Not bad. Then there was the Greek restaurant. The appetizer menu featured such delicacies as octopus and pickled herring. I settled on chicken and meatball soup (if anyone has ever heard of that, please let me know). What I got was big bowl of broth with ONE chicken chunk and ONE giant meatball. Nothing else, no vegetables or anything. I ate the meat but left the broth. That seemed to trouble the waitress. She asked if I liked it and I told her I ate the meat but she didn't really seem satisfied with that answer. I'm racking my brain trying to remember what the entree was so it must not have been memorable. Oh well. Needless to say, I was looking forward to heading to Paris with hopes of better food.
